Kandy city situated in the center of Sri Lanka & It is the capital of the Central Province. Kandy (Ancient Senkadagala) is the last capital of the Sinhala Monarchy the History of which goes back to at least five centuries before the beginning of the Common Era. 129 Km away from Colombo and 465 metres above sea level is Kandy, the charming hill capital, cultural centre of the island and a World Heritage City. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka. Kandy is the home of The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) one of the most venerable places for the Buddhist community of Sri Lanka and all around the world. The heritage of Kandy, Architecture, Sculpture, painting, Dance and Music, all such cultural traditions are endemic to Sri Lanka.Kandy remains the home for all denominations of major world religions.

           The history of Kandy dates back to the 14th century the period of King Wickramabahu the 3rd. Its establishment as a prosperous kingdom has come later in the 16th century during the time of Wimaladharmasuriya the 1st. However the end came to to this capital during the time of the last king of Sri Lanka Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in the 19th century.

Kandy  recognition as a sacred city with the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the two Maha Viharas of the Syamopali Maha Nikaya Malwatte and Asgiriya along with the four devales (temples) of gods Natha, Vishnu ,Skanda and the goddesss of purity Pathini and the ruins of the royal palace has contributed mainly to this cause. Also in the suburbs of Kandy are the ancient temples of Lankatilleke, Gadaladeniya, Gedige, Gangaramaya, Suduhumpola, Degaldoruwa, and Kundasale.

Esala Perahera

The glittering Esala Perahera, which is 235 years old, is one of the grandest events we have in Sri Lanka. Many locals and foreigners look forward to witness this wonderful festival every year. This is held during the Esala month, in August, honouring the sacred tooth relic.

The Perahera is held according to some rituals coming down from traditions. They are known as ‘Esala-keliya’. This festival begins with the installation of ‘kapa’ in each Devale. Esala Perahera is a Buddhist festival consisting of dances and nicely decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dances, Kandian dances and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'.

Lankatilaka Temple
Lankatilaka temple dates back to 14th century. The Lankatilaka Temple is considered to be one of the best preserved examples of traditional Sinhalese temple architecture. It is built on the summit of a rock called Panhalgala in the Udunuwara division of Kandy district and is approximately 12 km from the Peradeniya bridge. It has an unusual architectural design.The temple provides a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding hills, paddy fields and the diverse vegetation around it.

Gadaladeniya Temple
The Gadaladeniya Temple is a site with an ancient monastery is found on the flat rock at Diggala in the district of Kandy. According to a inscription there this temple was built by King Buwanekabahu IV in the year 1344. The chief architect of this temple has been a south indian called Ganesvarachari. Therefore this temple is essentially a South Indian design.
Important temples around Kandy are Embakke Devale, Dodanwela Devale, Handagala Vihara temple , Galmaduwa Vihara temple, Medawala Vihara and Nalanda Gedige.
